Are You a Weed or a Seed?

Are you wondering what the question "are you a weed or a seed"  means?  Ever wonder what it means when you hear the term "plant a seed" for Christ?  Or what the bible means when it talks about seeds and weeds?

In Matthew 13:3-8  you will find the parable of the sower planting wheat seeds in the field.  Here the field represents the world and different kinds of people in it.  The seed is the word of God and the sower is Christ.  In Matthew 13:18-23, you find out that the seeds represent people who hear God's word. You can be a living symbol of a God's seed on earth.  As a follower of Christ you can bring forth a great harvest.  Or you can be a lukewarm Christian-in-name-only that easily withers in the hard times or never produces anything for the kingdom.  Being a good seed requires a foundation in faith, finding and sharing the light, and immersing oneself in the truth of God's word.

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God." - Luke 8:11 (ESV)

Going a little further into Matthew 13:24-30 you will also find  the parable of the wheat and weeds.  Here the sower is the farm owner of the wheat field and the enemy is the bad guy who plants weeds among the good seeds (also known as wheat, harvest, sheaf).  In Matthew 13:37-43 it is revealed who the weeds are and from where they came.  The enemy is the devil with his impure, evil, and fake plans for the future.  The weeds (also referred to as tares, thistles, or thorns) that come up are the followers of false religions who try to destroy the good seeds in order to keep them from growing and producing a harvest. The job of the weeds is to confuse the farmer and his helpers, all those who are caring for and harvesting the field .  The weeds' loud voices or constant whispers try to discourage and distract the followers of Christ.  Weeds hide the light from getting to the seed so it can grow.

"The sower sows the word. " - Mark 4:14 (ESV)

Do you want to be a good seed that spreads the gospel and produces much for the kingdom?  Or are you content falling by the wayside and letting the weeds take over?  If the weeds take control and block the light, does that mean you can no longer grow?  Are you shining your inner light or are you unknowingly blocking the light fro others? Do not let the weeds take over.  Reach for the SON and let the light shine!

NOTES:

  • The parable of the sower and the seed is also found in Luke 8 and Mark 4.
  • Seeds in the Bible also represent having and growing faith, as an example look for mustard seed.
